Huawei launches EMUI 13: discover its new features

Unexpectedly, on Friday, October 21st, 2022, Huawei made official the EMUI 13, a new version of its customization layer. As opposed to what people thought, the company will keep this firmware in its global markets, and will leave its HarmonyOS operating system for China.

EMUI 13 was released shortly after HarmonyOS 3.0 and it is no coincidence. The reality is that the new global firmware update has many interface elements that were taken from the Chinese version.

What’s new in EMUI 13

This Android-based customization layer comes with several new features to promote productivity, personalization, security and privacy. Find the most outstanding changes here:

Drag to share

Now you can press and hold any image, text or file you want, drag it to Super Hub and paste or share it to any app or connected device via the new Drag to Share feature. In addition, you can easily find, reuse and delete previously pasted and shared content.

Smart personalized interaction

With EMUI 13 just swipe up on the app icon for quick, on-the-fly information and instant access to services. Smart folders, first introduced in EMUI 12, now have variable sizing options.

Another new feature is the ability to stack service widgets of the same size or mix widgets, system buttons and shortcuts to make better use of home screen space.

Music Share

With this feature, you will be able to stream the same music to two different headphones using the same smartphone. However, there are not many details about how it works. Huawei hasn’t said anything about its compatibility with third-party headphones.

SuperStorage

Storage management is always important. Huawei knows this, so they added this feature to help users. By stacking duplicate files, compressing less-used apps and deleting unnecessary downloads,  you can free up to 20GB of storage space.

Super Device and Multiscreen Collaboration.

With EMUI 13, collaborations between devices, including Huawei Vision, Huawei MatePad Paper and Huawei MateBook, are supported with the Super Device feature. This is an easy way to connect and interact with other devices.

In addition, now with Multi-Screen Collaboration (Multi-Screen Collaboration) mode, a horizontal window mode is included, which allows opening device applications in large horizontal windows.

Shared camera

Another interesting new feature of this new version of EMUI 13 has to do with the camera. Now, it is possible to connect two phones together to make multi-camera recordings. This feature can also be used during a video call, so you can switch between the different cameras of the connected devices.

Privacy features

Within the settings, a new Privacy Center has been added that will analyze how often apps access users’ personal data. It features an intuitive dashboard and offers system-level security risk detection.

In addition, to detect and deter malicious apps, the new security center will automatically scan for security risks, viruses and harassing behavior.

Which phones will be compatible with EMUI 13?

Which phones will be compatible with EMUI 13?

This is a question that, for now, has no answer. Huawei has not yet shared the list of devices that will receive the update to EMUI 13. However, it is expected that the next devices of the brand will incorporate it.

As for previous generations, it is most logical that it will reach high-end cell phones such as the Huawei Mate 20, the Huawei Mate Xs or the Huawei P30. Others chosen for the update could be:

  • Huawei P50, P50 Pro and P50 Pocket.
  • Huawei Mate 40, 40 Pro and 40RS.
  • Huawei P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro+
  • Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro
  • Huawei Nova 10 and Nova 10 Pro
