Everything we know about iPhone 12

The iPhone update is one of the most anticipated technology events of the year. It is one of the trend-setting devices that many people aspire to have, which generates much expectation around its launch. This year it did not arrive in September as it usually does, but it seems that October will be its month.

This delay, added to the previous release of iOS 14, has fed and confirmed some rumors about this new phone. This is what we know about the iPhone 12.

When is the IPhone 12 coming out?

After much expectation, the company confirmed the launch of the device for October 13th at 10 am Pacific in the United States. The event, as expected, will be only virtual.

The official release date is October 23rd, and that pre-orders begin on the 16th and end on the 20th. However, these dates would be for the standard model of the iPhone 12, but not the iPhone 12 Pro series, which will probably arrive in November to the stores.

Four versions of the iPhone 12

Gone are the years when Apple only launched an iPhone annually. In 2020, it seems that there will be not two or three, but four versions. Two models will replace the iPhone 11 and two more will replace the iPhone 11 Pro.

  • iPhone 12 mini: 5.4-inch screen with 2340 x 1080 pixel resolution.
  • iPhone 12: 6.1-inch panel with 2532 x 1170 pixel resolution.
  • iPhone 12 Pro: 6.1-inch XDR screen with 2532 x 1170 pixel resolution.
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max: 6.7-inch XDR screen with 2778 x 1824 pixels.

Return to traditional design

The new iPhone will be inspired by the iPhone 4 because instead of the rounded design introduced with the iPhone 6, the iPhone 12 will have a squared design. Thus, Apple returns to its pioneering design, a movement that perhaps seeks to make the device more attractive by invoking the nostalgia of those early models.

This new, straighter design will appear in all four versions, with only a few subtle differences. Some say that the iPhone 12 will have an aluminum frame and the iPhone 12 Pro, stainless steel. On the other hand, it seems that the ‘notch’ will be made smaller.

5G connectivity

Most rumors point to Apple adopting 5G connectivity on the iPhone 12, as many of its two main competitors, Samsung and Huawei, have done. However, not all models will have this technology. It seems that it could be only the iPhone 12 Pro and the Pro Max that have 5G.

However, some claim that the standard models, the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 12, could also have 5G connectivity, but without support for mmWave, a 5G version with higher transfer speeds. If so, only the more advanced models will have this enhanced version.

More powerful battery

Batteries are always a critical issue on smartphones. On the iPhone 12, there could be a significant improvement in its autonomy, since some of the models (mainly the Pro) could include 5G connectivity. This technology could make the device’s battery suffer a lot.

Therefore, to compensate for this energy expense, the brand could incorporate 4,400 mAh batteries, at least for the Pro model, which compared to the 3,969 mAh of the iPhone 11 Pro Max, would be a significant improvement.

What about accessories?

The iPhone 12 could be the first without headphones or a power adapter. However, it would not be the first brand product to come without a charger. This year’s Apple Watch was the first. It only includes the USB-C charging cable to Lightning.

As for the wired headphones that Apple used to include in the box, the reason for excluding them would be the disappearance of the traditional headphone connection. On newer models, the headset plugs directly into the phone’s Lightning port. There could be several reasons for this change.

Apple justifies it as a sustainability measure, since removing them from the boxes will make the boxes smaller, and at the same time, the company will be able to distribute more phones in fewer shipments. Besides, their consumers could already have these accessories at home.

However, there could be another reason. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, putting antennas and 5G compatibility on the new iPhones increases the production price of the devices. So by not putting these accessories, the company balances the costs and thus avoids raising the price of the device.

The most powerful smartphone on the market

All models of the iPhone 12 have a new chip: the A14. This processor with 5G capacity will have a superpower capable of surpassing even the most powerful Android. The current iPhone 11 is already faster than the fastest Android with Snapdragon 865 processor. According to rumors, the chip has a manufacturing process of 5 nanometers and will run at 3.1GHz

Enhanced cameras

As for the cameras, the iPhone 12 will have two cameras in the back, and the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will have three cameras, plus a Lidar sensor. While there are no assertions about how the optical sensors will be, some believe that the iPhone 12 will have regular and wide-angle lenses while the more advanced models will incorporate normal, zoom, and wide-angle lenses.

Besides the 3D depth cameras, thanks to the LIDAR sensor, Apple is expected to make improvements in night mode. The company could add a 3D detection laser matrix to achieve a substantial improvement in portrait mode. As for the front camera, everything indicates that there will be an improvement in Face ID to achieve a wider field of vision.

How much does the iPhone 12 cost?

So far, there is no clear information about the price. However, many point out that the iPhone 12 could be cheaper than the previous one since its price is around $649. This means it would be 50 dollars less than the starting price of the iPhone 11.

However, some speculate that the price will be higher due to the incorporation of 5G technology. In this case, the price of the iPhone 12 would be around $749. The Pro models would naturally be a few hundred dollars above this cost.
