The most important new features of Android 12

Is your smartphone on the list of Xiaomi devices that will receive the update? If so, you will surely want to know what new features are incorporated in the new operating system. Here are some of the most outstanding ones.

Improved performance

According to Google, Android 12 will be more efficient than previous versions. According to the company, for CPU access, time consumption will be 22% lower. In addition, they point out that the use of relevant cores by the system is reduced by 15%. However, it is important to note that this feature may vary depending on MIUI 13.

Privacy panel

Another new feature of this new version will be the incorporation of the ‘Privacy Panel’, a menu where users will be able to see when the apps they have have accessed the microphone or the camera, so they will have more direct access to this information. Through indicators, Android 12 will show when these elements are being used and it will be possible to disable access by means of small switches. Likewise, when sharing the location there will now be two options: precise and approximate.

New interactions

The new version of Android has a floating menu exclusively for video games, so that natively the system will have a bar of the game modes for when the games are running. Also, gesture navigation has been simplified so that users can move between different apps with less scrolling.

Another interesting addition is App Pairs, a feature designed to pin two apps together so that they always open together and share space. With this option, users will not have to activate the screen sharing function every time they use both apps.

Audio improvements and new image formats

Android 12 features spatial audio support for the MPEG-H codec and up to 24 audio channels. In addition, the HEVC video format and the AV1 or AVIF image formats will be supported. With the latter, you can enjoy better compression and lower losses compared to JPG.

How to update the version of MIUI on your Xiaomi?

When the updates are available, users can perform the process on their devices to have the latest version of MIUI; the one offered by Android 12 is version 13 of the Xiaomi’s customization layer. Usually, the manufacturer  sends a notification to warn about the availability of the update.

If you don’t receive the message, you can check for the update manually by following these steps:

  1. Open ‘Settings’ and tap ‘About your phone’.
  2. Select ‘MIUI’.
  3. The device will automatically check for available updates. You can also press the ‘Check for updates’ option to check for updates again.
  4. If you find any, tap ‘Download update’.

The download and installation will take a few minutes, but thanks to it you will be able to enjoy a new version of the customization layer. This usually includes improvements and new features that will allow you to get more out of your device.

It is advisable to perform this process frequently to check if the manufacturer has released any updates. This is important because your smartphone will be kept up to date not only for ease of use, but also to increase security and privacy.
